QUARTZITE MOUNTAIN (Las Vegas Range HP)

Joel, Eric, Terry, and Brian pose at the trailhead before we start our snowy ascent.

We passed a guzzler for the wildlife; a thin layer of ice covers the water.

Report by Terry Flood, Photos by Joel Brewster & Henry Jingle

As Joel Brewster had cancelled the previous day’s hike to Gass Peak and reduced our trip by one day to a hopeful dayhike of Quartzite Mountain (7,133’) because of unpredictable weather, I got up early and joined Joel, Eric Kassan, Brian Keith, and Henry the Mountain Man at the Corn Springs Visitor Center in the National Desert Wildlife Refuge in a large snowmass that had come down the previous evening to as low as 3,000 feet in some areas. It was an exciting drive in to just 0.2 miles short of the official trailhead at around 5,100’ where a short steep hill became our parking spot.

Henry decided to just take pictures and return another drier day, but the four of us started out up a long road/trail/gully in ankle-deep snow. My back started bothering me at around the 5,800’ level so I turned around rather than slow the rest of the remaining group down and they continued on up to the ridgeline and peak and then back in just under seven hours. They did not find a register under all that snow but it was melting fast and they had quite a view, particularly to the west in the Spring Range where the snow was obviously pervasive on Mt. Charleston. Henry and I have decided to return at a future date and will do the peak with less snow, but that particular day was perfect t-shirt weather with incredible photographic conditions!!

We are back at the car after our hike. Notice how much snow has melted compared to the picture above.
